The 20th Annual Beyond the Badge 5K Run & Walk, honoring the Jason Baker Foundation, Inc., 501(c)3, is scheduled for Sunday, September 19, 2021. The timing of the event will always provide special significance, since it was just after the September 11 attacks that Jason Baker was killed.
Unlike other run/walks, this special event combines the reverence of the opening memorial ceremony with the excitement of the competitive 5K race and the fun of the non-competitive fitness walk. An event favorite is the popular team competition for both civilian and public safety teams. A team trophy is awarded to the winning team in each division. More importantly, the Beyond the Badge 5K Run & Walk provides a unique opportunity for members of the community and those in public safety to come together and compete as a tribute to those that have fallen in the line of duty.
Participation in this event continues to grow each year as more and more people begin to understand and appreciate the vital role these brave men and women play in our daily lives. This role has never been more evident than now when our nation is at war. The men and women of public safety stand as our nation’s first responders in the war on terror. Now, more than ever, we should take the time to show our thanks and gratitude to those who risk their lives on our behalf.
The event consists of a:
- 5K Run & Fitness Walk
- 5K Team Competition
- 1.5 Mile Family Stroll
All events are open to people of all ages and abilities.
The courses wind through historic, tree lined Crown Hill Cemetery and will pass by the Heroes of Public Safety Section and Crown Hill’s beautiful Gothic Chapel. An Honor Guard is posted at the Heroes of Public Safety Memorial during the entire event. The 5K courses summit “The Hill”, the highest point (842 ft) in Marion County and the final resting place of famous Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley. The pre-race festivities begin with a non-denominational worship service held at the Peace Chapel located within the Community Mausoleum at Crown Hill. Opening Ceremonies follow the worship service and include remarks and the posting of colors. As a tribute to the men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty, the names of those that have fallen over the previous year will be read followed by a moment of silence and recognition of those that currently serve.
Refreshments are provided to all registered participants. An awards ceremony follows the run with the following prizes presented:
Top 3 Overall Finishers (Male & Female)
- 1st Place = $100
- 2nd Place = $75
- 3rd Place = $50
Age Division awards in the 5-K Run are medals and will be given to the top 3 males and females in each age division. Age groups include 12 and under, 13-14, 15-19 then 5 year increments after that (run division only).
The top three teams (up to ten members per team) will receive awards. The winning Public Safety Team will be presented the Heroes of Public Safety Trophy to be displayed in their department. The top Civilian Team will be presented the Pillars of the Community Trophy.

- 8:00 a.m Non-denominational worship service at the Peace Chapel
- 8:15 a.m. Opening Ceremony
- 9:00 a.m. 5K Run/Walk Start for Individuals & Teams
- 9:05 a.m. 1.5 Mile Family Stroll Start
- 10:15 a.m. Awards Ceremony
- $30 pre-registration fee (through 9/13 at 11:59PM EST). Shirts not guaranteed after 9/13 at 11:59 PM.
Seniors 65 and older save $5.00 at checkout.

Race Shirt Deadline: Participants who pre-register before the end of the day on Monday, Sept. 13th will be guaranteed a race shirt in the size of their choice (small through 2X). Those who pre-register between Tuesday, Sept. 14th and the end of pre-registration on Saturday, Sept. 18th at 4:59 pm, will receive a shirt while supplies last, but the size is not guaranteed.
Race Day Registration

Race Day registration is available for Individuals only. There will be no Race Day registration for Teams.
Packet pick-up will be held on race day at Crown Hill Cemetery.
